Chicago Day Five
We started off today with a low (I repeat low) of 28 degrees and head off into the city with real intentions to buy shoes.
With a belly full of rockmelon, we hopped on the local blue line train into the city, headed into DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) and was met with success.
Blister minimised, we wondered through the city picking up a doughnut or two for morning tea. Who are we if we don’t indulge in the American tradition of doughnuts.
Seth trying to unhinge his jaw.
We stuck to the plan to hit up the Lincoln Park Zoo today however with the heat starting to get to us we decide to catch the bus.
Spotted from the bus window.
The zoo was free entry, and accepted donations. An awesome idea for a large city, the zoo becomes part of other daily activities like a walk in the park.
Never realised how big the wingspan is on a vulture.
Jordan’s favourite.
Dwarf Crocodile, not dwarfing my fear.
Rhino, one of two, the only animal not too bothered with the heat.
These guys came right up to the glass and scared a small child.
A great fan of Jordan’s.
The animals weren’t the only interesting part of the zoo.
Unfortunately the fountain didn’t work.
The new down-under.
For lunch we walked for what seemed like an eternity in the heat to Chicago Diner (thanks Seth, you’re never allowed to navigate again). They have a fully vegetarian menu, so it was practically overwhelming to have whatever we wished.
The dinner in question.
With our lunch meals picked, we also had a cocktail each. Possibly the strongest cocktail I’ve had in my life, three sips in and knees were already tingly.
Portabella truffle melt and southern fried burger.
Completely exhausted, we caught a bus and a train to head back to our apartment for an afternoon nap (a staple now). Rousing ourselves for dinner, we ordered what we thought was a small pizza, turned out to be able to feed 6. Pizza for the next few days it is.
We will never have to buy food again.
Rolling back to bed we are ready to brave the night of 28 degrees.
